About

Alex Casso is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice overlaps studio work, museum experience, and community-based arts education. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, and film, his work draws from South Texas Spanish colonial history, family narratives, and the visual language of the American West, exploring how memory, myth, and identity are shaped through images and storytelling.

Alongside his studio practice, Casso has spent over fifteen years working in arts education and cultural institutions in New York and San Antonio. Teaching artists of all ages, his work emphasizes access, collaboration, and the role of the arts in building community and shaping culture. His community-based projects include mural work, collaborative exhibitions, and institutional partnerships that connect artists, students, and the public.

Casso’s artistic approach is informed by extensive professional experience in museums. He was a founding staff member and the first Exhibitions Manager at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling, and later served as Exhibitions Manager at Japan Society in New York. After relocating to San Antonio in 2019, he worked with the San Antonio Museum of Art in both the exhibitions and education departments. In 2020, he became the founding art teacher at Promesa Academy Charter School, where he worked with elementary students and organized collaborative student exhibitions with Artpace, the San Antonio Museum of Art, Presa House Gallery, and the McNay Art Museum.

He is currently producing his first short film, The Death of Billy the Kid, which revisits the events of July 14, 1881 to explore themes of love, friendship, and betrayal through the lens of regional history and visual culture.
